FIT-DAY: On-site safety footwear fitting and advice
Atlas developed the FIT-DAY concept, where employees receive an on-site 3D foot scan followed by personalised advice on suitable safety footwear and insoles.
Wearing safety footwear is part of everyday working life in many industries. However, choosing the right size alone is often not enough to ensure the best possible fit and comfort. Important factors include:
- Foot shape
- Foot width
- Instep height
- Walking pattern
All of these factors influence comfort, support and safety. To find out how organisations can better support their employees, we spoke to Sjef van Schaijk, FIT Product Expert at Atlas. In our interview, he explains how FIT-DAY works and the benefits it offers organisations.
Interview with Sjef van Schaijk
What exactly is FIT-DAY?
“FIT-DAY is a mobile consultancy service where employees are measured on site using a 3D foot scanner. Based on the scan, we determine not only foot length and width, but also identify foot alignment, pressure points and any support requirements.
Based on the results, employees receive advice on the most suitable safety footwear and, where necessary, the appropriate insoles.”
What makes the FIT Truck different from a traditional fitting session?
“A standard fitting session usually focuses on shoe size. We go several steps further. Our 3D foot scanner provides a complete picture of the foot, allowing us to give much more accurate advice on fit, support and, where required, orthopaedic solutions.”
Why do companies invest in a FIT-DAY?
“Choosing the wrong safety footwear can lead to poor posture, fatigue and musculoskeletal complaints. Over time, this may even contribute to absenteeism. Properly fitting safety footwear helps employees work more comfortably and confidently. It can also reduce the risk of trips, slips and ankle injuries.”
Which benefits are often underestimated?
“Many organisations focus primarily on the purchase of the footwear itself. What is often overlooked is the positive impact on employees. Employees appreciate the extra attention given to their comfort and wellbeing. In addition, there is no need to travel to an external location for a fitting, as everything takes place on site.”
What does a 3D foot scan reveal that cannot be seen with the naked eye?
“The scan provides detailed insight into the condition and alignment of the feet, as well as the distribution of pressure points. This helps us recommend the correct length and width fitting, together with the most suitable insole where required.”
How does Atlas translate the scan results into a practical recommendation?
“The data is assessed by experienced specialists in the FIT Truck. Based on thousands of previous scans, they know which safety footwear models and which level of support best match a particular foot profile.”
What do employees experience during a FIT-DAY?
“Many people have worn safety footwear for years that does not fit them properly. During a FIT-DAY, they gain a better understanding of their foot health and often discover for the first time why certain complaints occur. The aim is for employees to walk comfortably throughout the working day without unnecessary strain.”
Are there any measurable results?
“A study conducted in Germany showed that 87% of participants reported an improved quality of life, 75% experienced less pain and 67% noticed improved mobility. We also regularly receive positive feedback from organisations in the Netherlands about the solutions provided to their employees.”
From how many employees does a FIT-DAY become worthwhile?
“A FIT-DAY is generally suitable for organisations with around twenty employees or more. It can also be organised in phases for companies employing hundreds or even thousands of people.”
How does a typical FIT-DAY work?
“Once the FIT Truck arrives, it is set up at a pre-arranged location. Employees attend individually for their foot scan. On average, each scan takes around eight minutes. Afterwards, the employer receives an overview of the results, the recommended solutions and the selected shoe sizes.”
According to Atlas, what is the biggest misconception about safety footwear?
“Many people assume that their casual shoe size will automatically be the correct size for safety footwear. In practice, this is often not the case. Different lasts, width fittings and safety constructions mean that the correct size can vary considerably between brands and models.”
Why should organisations not wait too long?
“Your feet literally form the foundation of your body. When problems develop there, they can affect the entire musculoskeletal system. Investing in properly fitting safety footwear helps support the long-term health, wellbeing and sustainable employability of employees.”

Following the foot assessment, it is determined whether no additional module is required or whether Module 2, Module 3 or Module 4 is the most appropriate option.

Select the available options for your employees
The FIT-DAY concept consists of four modules. Before the event, organisations decide which options will be made available to their employees.
- Module 1: Foot Measurement and Analysis
- Module 2: Comfort Solution with ERGO-MED Insoles
- Module 3: Personalised FIT Insoles
- Module 4: Medical Orthopaedic Solutions
This allows employers to choose either a basic foot assessment or a more comprehensive programme that also includes personalised support.
Foot health as part of sustainable employability
Feet are under constant strain throughout the working day. This is particularly true in logistics, manufacturing, construction and production environments, where employees often walk long distances or spend extended periods standing on hard floors.
Poorly fitting safety footwear does not just affect the feet. It can also contribute to discomfort in the knees, hips and back. As a result, the FIT-DAY approach focuses not only on shoe size, but on the overall strain placed on the musculoskeletal system.
Insights for employers
In addition to individual recommendations, organisations also receive an anonymised overview of the measured workforce. This gives employers a better understanding of:
- Common foot-related complaints
- Distribution of shoe sizes
- The need for additional support
- Potential risks associated with non-certified insoles
For HR professionals, health and safety officers and occupational health coordinators, this provides a clearer picture of the needs within the organisation.
Safety starts with the right fit
Safety footwear is often assessed in terms of certification, protection and durability. In practice, however, the right fit is just as important. Footwear that does not fit properly can lead to discomfort, fatigue and reduced stability.
Therefore, the Atlas FIT-DAY concept combines foot analysis, safety footwear and personalised support in a single on-site fitting session. It is not just about the footwear itself, but also about the person wearing it.
