Elka Pro: standards and certifications
When choosing waterproof clothing, don’t just look at the hydrostatic head rating. The seams, construction and certification of the clothing are also important. According to Elka, Elka Pro products are certified to various European standards for protective clothing.

EN 343
EN 343 is the standard for protective clothing against weather conditions such as rain. This standard for protective clothing (PPE) assesses factors including resistance to water penetration and water vapour resistance.
Elka states that all Elka Pro products are certified to EN 343.

EN 14605
EN 14605 is the standard for protective clothing against liquid chemicals. The standard covers, among other things, clothing that protects parts of the body against liquid chemicals, such as types PB[3] and PB[4].
According to the manufacturer, most Elka Pro products are certified to EN 14605.

EN 14126
EN 14126 is the standard for protective clothing against biological agents, such as fungi, bacteria and viruses. This protective clothing is tested for its resistance to the penetration of biologically contaminated materials.
According to the manufacturer, most Elka Pro products are certified to this standard.

Why waterproof clothing needs to meet different requirements in the cleaning industry
Professional cleaning is very different from working in the rain. During wet cleaning operations, protective clothing may also be exposed to splashing dirt, high or low temperatures, foam, cleaning agents and disinfectants.
Workers are also constantly moving, whether spraying, scrubbing, bending or working around machinery and equipment. Frequent bending and reaching place additional strain on the material and seams. Elka Pro workwear therefore features reinforced seams in high-stress areas, such as under the arms and at the crotch.
Certain tasks, such as cleaning in the food industry, may also involve biological hazards. These include exposure to bacteria, viruses and other harmful microorganisms. Protective clothing certified to EN 14126 can provide protection against these hazards.
Elka Pro workwear is made from lightweight, flexible PU-coated polyamide with high tear resistance. The range includes jackets, trousers and coveralls for intensive cleaning tasks.
Kleurcodering met ELKA PRO
Elka Pro clothing can be colour-coded by department, zone or task. Workers can then see at a glance which clothing belongs in each area. Colour coding in the food industry helps reduce the risk of cross-contamination. Elka Pro workwear is available in several colours.

Waterproof material and waterproof seams
Waterproof material alone is not enough. Water can also penetrate through the seams, which is why Elka Pro uses welded seams. The welded seams are reinforced under the arms and at the crotch, where the clothing is subjected to additional strain during bending, reaching and kneeling. The reverse side of the material is also water-repellent, making it harder for water to get underneath the clothing.

Comfort, even during intensive work
During a cleaning shift, workers may wear waterproof clothing for hours at a time. This makes weight, flexibility and fit important considerations. Elka Pro’s PU-coated polyamide material is lightweight and flexible, allowing workers to move more freely while working.
This is useful when cleaning underneath machinery with a hose, bending frequently or working above shoulder height. These movements also place additional strain on the seams in certain areas. Elka Pro features reinforced welded seams under the arms and at the crotch.

Elka Pro bib and brace trousers with reinforced knee pockets
The ELKA PRO bib and brace trousers have reinforced knee pockets made from highly abrasion-resistant material. This helps reduce wear during tasks that involve frequent kneeling.
The trousers have adjustable braces, elasticated leg openings and a reinforced crotch. The ELKA PRO material has a hydrostatic head rating of 20,000 mm and provides certified protection against rain, chemicals and biological hazards.

What does a hydrostatic head rating of 8,000 or 20,000 mm mean?
The hydrostatic head rating indicates how much water pressure a particular material can withstand before water penetrates it. A material with a hydrostatic head rating of 20,000 mm is therefore more resistant to water pressure than one rated at 8,000 mm.
However, a higher rating does not necessarily mean better waterproof clothing. How the material was tested is particularly important, including whether the tests were carried out on new material or after washing or ageing. Without this information, it is difficult to compare two ratings accurately.
A hydrostatic head rating of 8,000 mm may already provide sufficient water protection for professional use. At 20,000 mm, the material offers greater resistance to water pressure.
According to Elka, all products in the Elka Pro collection have a hydrostatic head rating of over 20,000 mm, providing a high level of protection against water penetration.
Maintenance affects the lifespan of protective clothing
Proper care helps keep waterproof clothing in good condition for longer. Chemical residues, in particular, can damage the material if left on the clothing.
Elka recommends rinsing Elka Pro clothing after contact with chemicals and hanging it up to dry. According to Elka, the clothing can be washed up to 25 times at 60°C. Do not use fabric softener or waterproofing treatments.
Replace worn or heavily washed clothing in good time to ensure that it continues to provide the stated level of protection. Always follow Elka’s official care and washing instructions, as these may vary depending on the type of garment.
